BIOGRAPHY
b. 1957
Jimmy Katz received his BA in political science and studied photography with John McKee at Bowdoin College. Katz has been the go-to photographer at more than three-hundred recording sessions, and more than eighty magazine covers – giving him unprecedented access to the major players in jazz. Blue Note producer Michael Cuscuna has written, “It is his passion and humanity as much as his skill and artistry that define his work . . . he has developed his own style with the camera that is as identifiable as Armstrong’s tone on trumpet or Coltrane’s sound on tenor sax.” In 2006 Katz received an award for jazz photography from the Jazz Journalists Association.
