BIOGRAPHY
1937-2005
Paul Hoeffler earned his BFA in photography in 1959 at The Rochester Institute, studying under Minor White. He moved to New York, working as a master printer while building his career as a photographer – he also worked in Rochester and later Toronto.
Primarily known for his photographs of the American jazz scene of the ‘50s and ‘60s – Hoeffler’s images of icons such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Oscar Peterson, and Sarah Vaughan appeared on record-covers released by Blue Note, Mercury, Prestige, and Verve. Hoeffler also had a great passion for small, regional jazz clubs – photographing the patrons and the musicians gathered there. Many of Hoeffler's photographs were featured in the celebrated documentary by Ken Burns, Jazz.
