Gitterman Gallery is proud to present the first solo exhibition of the contemporary artist, Joshua Lutz (b.1975). The exhibition will open on Thursday, June 10th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continue through Saturday, August 7th.

The exhibition includes color photographs of contemporary environments from across the United States and juxtaposes images of seemingly dissimilar environments; from suburban Florida to the industrial plants along the New Jersey Turnpike; from the faux architecture of Las Vegas to the factory worker homes of Bethlehem Pennsylvania; from the commercialized Niagara Falls to the vastness of the Southwestern desert. Each environment informs the other by suggesting that the content of one image and its absence within the next are equally important.

Lutz invites us to consider what our environment has become while in service to our way of life, and thus question the priorities that have created the need for such transformations.

Using a large format view camera, Joshua Lutz creates images with a perspective beyond our normal vision both in their depth of field and their uncommon vantage points. The absence of people and specific narrative leaves room for our imagination.

A graduate of Bard College in 1997, Joshua Lutz has already received awards from Communication Arts, Photo District News and American Photography. His work has been featured in Harper’s, Architectural Record, The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine.
