Daido Moriyama Biography

Daido Moriyama was born in Ikeda-cho (now Ikeda-shi), Osaka. In 1961 he moved to Tokyo to join the eminent photographers group VIVO, whose members included Shomei Tomatsu and Eikoh Hosoe. Though the group dissolved before he could join, he became Eikoh Hosoe's assistant and was fortunate to assist Hosoe on his famous series of Yukio Mishima called Barakei: Ordeal by Roses. In 1968 he joined Provoke, a magazine founded at a time of significant social change and devoted to the expressive potential of photography. It's subtitle was Provocative Materials for Thought. Moriyama and other photographers associated with Provoke consciously made images in a different style from what was accepted at the time, utilizing camera movement, emphasizing grain and darkness, and creating a visceral experience. Though Moriyama is seen today as the leading figure of this style and period, he went on to develop a broader visual vocabulary. This print is a rare vintage print from the 1970s of a lesser known image that shows his continued passion for street photography.
