Yvonne Chevalier Biography

Yvonne Chevalier (1899-1982) began photographing in 1909 at the age of 10. By 1929 she had her own studio and produced a fine series of nudes and by 1930 her photographs were already being published in various periodicals. Chavalier made great portraits of important artists and writers and was the official photographer for the painter Georges Rouault. In 1936 she was a co-founder, along with Pierre Jahan and Emmanuel Sougez, of le Rectangle group and exhibited at La Galerie de la Pléiade, Galerie René van den Berg and Fraçois Tuefferd's gallery, Le Chasseur d'image. In 1945 the majority of her work was lost in a fire. In 1946 she was a co-founder of the Groupes des XV, whose goal was to promote photography as art and draw attention to the preservation of the French photographic heritage.
